Thoughts About the Trayvon/Zimmerman Incident

Ever since the end of the Civil War, the United States government and its citizens have made efforts, albeit sometimes small efforts, to end racism, prejudice, and bring equality to the Black population. All these efforts are sabotaged frequently by the Media. Instead of trying to continue efforts to bring equality to African-Americans, the Media often sensationalizes stories (called “Yellow Journalism”) about conflicts between Caucasians and Blacks.

[Sometimes I may refer to them as Blacks, African-Americans, Negroes (United Negro College Fund), Colored People (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), and People of Color, because those are all names by which the Blacks refer to themselves–not including the “N” word, which no white person ever utter. It seems as though the African-Americans have a very serious identity crisis that they cannot settle.]

The Media sensationalizes these stories, because that is what sells. What they result in doing, however, is sabotaging years of efforts made by an unknown number of people who are working for equality and Civil Rights for all. All those efforts are gone like a puff of smoke when the Media in its reporting of a story sensationalizes it causing Blacks to rise up, riot, and demand justice. But–justice for whom?

In the Trayvon Martin/Zimmerman incident, both the Media and the African-American population have rushed to judgment before all the facts were available. The fury of the Black population was fueled by the reprehensible actions of one of NBC’s producers who edited a phone conversation between Zimmerman and a police dispatcher to make it sound as if Zimmerman was racial profiling. That action is unforgivable. The producer intentionally mislead everyone who heard that edited phone conversation. To NBC’s credit, the producer was fired just this past week, but the damage had already been done.

The New Black Panther Party is offering ten thousand dollars ($10,000) to anyone who can reveal Zimmerman’s hideout. What is the Black Panther Party going to do if they find Zimmerman? Lynch him from the nearest tree?

Blacks across America, prominent Blacks, common Black citizens, have already condemned Zimmerman and accused him of cold-blooded murder. Where in the country is Zimmerman going to get a fair trial? Cascade Caverns? At the bottom of the Grand Canyon? Where can he be tried fairly?

The Colored People (NAACP) are enraged and when people are enraged and irrational they refuse to listen to reason and put aside their prejudices. No matter what anyone says about self defense or Zimmerman’s injuries, the Blacks will not accept the possibility that Zimmerman was indeed protecting himself. They will categorically, thoroughly, completely refuse to accept that, perhaps, Trayvon actually assaulted Zimmerman. Why will they refuse? Because this is a matter of race, that’s why. It’s not a matter of fairness or justice. It is a matter of Black against White, and both the Media and the Black population are to blame for this.

I don’t believe African-Americans really want complete, 100% equality. Because of the human tendency to discriminate, not only concerning race, but also religion, economics, social, physical, mental and other reasons, total and complete equality is a Utopia; a dream; an unreachable goal. It will never happen, not just because of white people, but just as much by Black people. I don’t think Blacks really want equality or will ever get it.

If 100% equality is reached, if racism and prejudice were eradicated, there is a 14-letter word that would no longer hold the power it holds now. That 14-letter word would be stricken from the English dictionary. That 14-letter word is discrimination.

If a Black person doesn’t get what he/she wants or feels like they have been treated unfairly (whether they actually were or not is often debatable), all that person has to do is scream out that 14-letter word and the nation is “called to arms”. Every Black, every Civil Rights worker, and every career-ambitious journalist and lawyer catapults into action. An investigation is launched to discover if the screamer was discriminated against or not. If the conclusion is they were not discriminated against, more protests are born and more criticism is heard of the system. There is no satisfying anyone. The hatred continues to burn under the surface not unlike the underground coal fires that have been burning for years in the coal rich Appalachian Mountain region of this country. The fires are impossible to extinguish.

If total equality every becomes a reality, Blacks could no longer use that 14-letter word to their advantage. It would be an empty gun. They would be completely equal and have no “edge”, no razor sharp sword to swing about the heads of non-Black people. They would have to come up with some other word to use that would give them an edge.

Equality is a wonderful ideal, but it would level the playing field and not be such a wonderful deal for those who are not classified as Caucasians. No matter how hard we all work for equality, for the extinction of racism and bigotry–there will always be those who don’t want it, including the Media, who would have to look for other reasons to sensationalize the news.
